Concussion

A concussion is the most common type of TBI and occurs when a force impacts an accident victim’s head, causing it to collide with the skull and cause injury. Concussions can range from mild to severe, with varying signs and symptoms associated. Recovery can take a few days to months or years depending on the severity.

Contusion

Contusions often accompany concussions and are essentially a bruise on the brain that occurs after an accident. This means that the capillaries have burst on and in the brain, causing mild bleeding. The damage caused by a contusion is often dictated by its size, location, and how long it lasts.

Brain Hemorrhage

A brain hemorrhage refers to uncontrolled bleeding on or in the brain. This is known as a focal brain injury, meaning that it occurs in a specific spot. This can occur because of a torn artery or significant damage to a particular part of the brain.

Intracranial Hematoma

A hematoma is a collection of blood outside of a blood vessel, and in the cranial cavity a hematoma can take many forms. An epidural hematoma is a collection of blood between the skull and brain, a subdural hematoma is collection of blood in the lining of the brain, and an intracerebral hematoma is a collection of blood inside of the brain.

Coup-contrecoup Brain Injury

A coup-contrecoup injury occurs when the force of an accident is so large that the brain strikes the skull, bounces, and strikes the opposite side of the skull. In effect, the brain suffers two separate injuries instead of just one.

Diffuse Axonal Injury

This is the most serious type of brain injury and occurs when the brain gets twisted or shaken hard inside the skull. This causes the long connecting fibers of the brain, known as axons, to tear which causes a lack of function. The more that is torn, the more functional damage occurs.

Penetrating Brain Injury

A penetrating brain injury occurs when an object pierces the skull and physically penetrates the brain. The most common objects involved in a penetrating brain injury are bullets, shrapnel, or other objects used to perpetrate violent acts.
