National News Outlets Report On Camp Lejeune Claims

It is now no secret that veterans and their family members who lived at Camp LeJeune between the years 1953-1987 were exposed to contaminated water. The contaminated water was used by veterans and their families stationed at Camp LeJeune every day in baths, for drinking, washing up, and for everything else during that period. As a result of exposure to the toxic and contaminated water, veterans and their family members suffered and continue to suffer from severe injuries, such as cancers and other very serious illnesses.

New legislation signed into law by President Biden allows eligible veterans and their family members who lived at Camp LeJeune for at least 30 days anytime between the years 1953 and 1987 and who were injured as a result of being exposed to contaminated water to bring claims for money damages against the United States government. Since the passage of the legislation earlier this year, thousands of veterans and family members of veterans have filed claims under the Honoring our Promise to Address Toxins Act (PACT) of 2022 and Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022. As the number of veteran claimants grows, national news outlets have latched on to the story, spreading the word about the potential for veterans and their family members to get compensation for injuries suffered from the contaminated water at Camp LeJeune.

CBS is a national news outlet that has recently picked up the story about Camp LeJeune claims under the PACT Act and Camp Lejeune Justice Act.  According to a CBS article from late November, this year,  14,000 claims have already been filed by veterans and their family members against the U.S. government since the passage of the PACT Act and Camp Lejeune Justice Act. Although already thousands of veterans and their family members have filed claims, the number of claimants, when all is said and done, could climb to as many as a million, according to the report.

According to the report, the Department of Veterans Affairs internal watchdog revealed that an estimated one-third of disability claims brought by veterans stationed at Camp Lejeune were either denied outright or mishandled. The new legislation expands Veterans Affairs’ coverage of disability claims brought by veterans for injuries and illnesses related to toxic exposure. Under the new laws, the Navy has up to six months to adjudicate a proper claim filed by a veteran or their family members for compensation related to toxic water exposure at Camp Lejeune.  Once the six months has elapsed, if the Navy has not adjudicated a claim, the claimant can file a lawsuit for compensation in court. In addition, if the Navy denies a Camp Lejeune claim, the claimant has the right to file suit in Federal District Court. Claimants have the right to be represented by a Houston mass tort lawyer.
