Camp LeJeune Hero Presented With Prestigious Award While Camp Lejeune Remains In The Spotlight For Water Contamination Claims
Most of the current news surrounding Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, is resoundingly about the toxic water that veterans were exposed to at the camp for over thirty years. It is now well-known throughout Houston and the United States that for the over 30-year period between 1953 and 1987, American veterans and their families who lived at Camp Lejeune were exposed to toxic water contaminated with harmful chemicals through the water supplied to them at Camp Lejeune for drinking, washing, and otherwise everyday use. It is also now well-known that the consequences of exposure to the types of chemicals that contaminated the water at Camp Lejeune can cause serious illnesses and diseases in humans, such as cancers, Multiple Myeloma, birth defects, and Parkinson’s disease.
Simply put, the recent news and media attention around Camp Lejeune has predominantly focused on the serious illnesses that plague veterans and their family members who were stationed there, and the recent 2022 legislation that enables those individuals to get compensation for their injuries from the government. However, in December, 2022, good news came out of Camp Lejeune when a Camp Lejeune Marine stationed there was honored with a prestigious award for saving a man’s life on Independence Day. According to local reports, Sergeant Patricio Recalde Jr. was awarded the Certification of Extraordinary Personal Action, which includes the President’s signature, by U.S. Marines and Sailors and the American Red Cross on December 7, 2022. Sgt. Recalde was honored with the award for his heroic actions on July 4, when he and another Marine, SSgt. Justin Le of Marietta, Georgia, saved a man from the waters of Lake Lanier when they were boating in their personal watercraft. The two marines pulled a male victim, who had no life preserver, out of rough waters and brought him to shore after hearing screaming on the shoreline and seeing the male and a female – who had a life preserver and was clinging to it – in the water. Reports later confirm that the male and female were riding in their own watercraft when they lost control and were ejected into the lake. Subsequent reports also confirm that if the two marines had not taken the action that they did, the man would have likely perished in the lake.
