Emotional Town Hall Meeting Advises Veterans And Families About Camp Lejeune Toxic Contaminated Water Claims
On January 24 of this year, veterans who served at the North Carolina marine corps base Camp Lejeune and their family members came together for a town hall meeting in Holly Ridge, North Carolina. Local reports note that the town hall meeting was an emotional one, as many veterans and their family members who were stationed at Camp Lejeune were exposed to toxic and contaminated water and now suffer from serious and debilitating illnesses, cancers, and disease from their time living at Camp Lejeune and being exposed to the water there. According to local reports, one of the families that attended the Camp Lejeune toxic water contamination town hall meeting learned that they may be eligible for monetary compensation for illnesses and diseases that they now suffer from due to their exposure to the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune when they lived there. The mother in the family, Maria Colemenares, who lived at Camp Lejeune developed Parkinson’s disease, a serious progressive disorder that impacts the body’s nervous system and parts of the body that are controlled by the nerves. Ms. Colemenares said with regard to the toxic water at Camp Lejeune, “We didn’t notice a strong smell…we bathed in it, we washed with it, rinsed our tools with it, and all that.” In addition to Ms. Colemenares, her son, Tony, and his siblings who also lived at the North Carolina marine corps base, may also be entitled to money compensation under new legislation for Camp Lejeune water contamination victims.
At the town hall meeting, the Colemenares family learned that they and other families and veterans who were stationed and/or lived at Camp Lejeune between August 1, 1953 and December 31, 1987 may be entitled to money compensation for their illnesses. New legislation passed in 2022 entitles veterans and their family members who were stationed and/or lived at Camp Lejeune during that time frame for at least 30 days and who suffer from a covered medical condition, like Parkinson’s disease, can file a claim for money due. For the Colemenares and many other veterans and their family members who have had to live with terrible diseases and trauma from living at Camp Lejeune, news of the new legislation provides a glimpse of hope.
